But tellingly, none\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eof it's songs could be considered well-known. New York's Steven\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eGrossman released the first major label album by an openly gay artist in\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e1974, and Tom Robinson hit the UK Top 20 with the fiery Glad To Be Gay\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ein 1978, but these are the exceptions.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"aec-desc-review collapse\"\u003eThe coy ambivalence of Lou Reed\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand David Bowie was about as sexually adventurous as the 1970s music\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eindustry got, and most Strong Love artists released their own self-funded\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003erecordings in very limited numbers.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eUnlike their lesbian counterparts, who joined forces to create long-lasting\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003erecord labels, strong distribution networks and considerable sales figures,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003egay male musicians in the 1970s existed largely in solitary bubbles. Which\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003edoesn't mean they didn't carve out niches of their own.
